Mizuna Red

Red Mizuna

Red Mizuna (Brassica rapavar nipposinica) is a red leaf version of the Japanese heirloom variety Green Mizuna. As a microgreen, Mizuna is packed with flavour. It has a peppery Mustard flavour. It grows fine microgreens with a light stem, purple top and green frill. The purple tops can have splashes of greenery that gives Red Mizuna a unique look. The frilly true leaf generally comes out green and really gives this microgreen a vibrant appearance. Mizuna is full of healthy nutrients like Vitamins K, A, C, E and the minerals Manganese, Calcium, Potassium and Iron.

Expected Yield: 120-150g

Lay a thin layer of moist coco peat and perlite mixture in a tray, about half the depth of the tray. Mist the surface of the grow medium
Cover the surface area with seeds. Roughly 10-15 grams for a standard 27x53x3cm grow tray.
Press down firmly and mist with water.
Ad another tray (preferably without holes) on top of the seeds. Ad some weight in the form of a small tile or stone. This helps to form strong roots and get rid of unwanted seed hulls.
Keep wet with a spray bottle until all seeds have germinated and start to lift the top tray. Remove top tray and flip over to place greens into blackout. This helps the stems to lengthen.
After about 2 days, move the tray into light. This could be into artificial light, sunlight. An exposed windowsill will work just fine.
Make sure they have enough water each day. They should be ready between 15 and 20 days

Growing Tip:

Keep seeds moist with a mister to ensure even germination.

Origin:

Mizuna is thought to have originated in China but has been naturalized and grown in Japan for centuries. Also known as Japanese mustard greens, the Tokita Seed Company in Japan, was the offer a red leaf version of the already well-known green leaf Mizuna.
