Edible Flowers

A creative addition of color and flavor ...

A few notes on edible flowers ...

Seed – The type of seed used is all determined by needs. For organic practices untreated non-GMO seed is needed.

Environment – Outdoors most varieties like sunny conditions, well drained soil and healthy soil conditions. Fertilizer higher in potassium aids flower production. Modern indoor growing practices make it easier to grow flowers indoors.

Flowering seasons – Most flowers bloom from spring to summer. However, some bloom more often. Flowers like Dianthus can bloom almost year round, and with proper care, Violas can bloom in spring and fall.

Grow medium – Most flowers will grow well in a well balanced soil with proper drainage but retains sufficient moisture and does not dry out completely. A quality potting mix with some organic compost on the first few inches works well.

Duration – The time from seed to flower varies among varieties. Violas can bloom between 100 to 120 days. Nasturtiums can bloom within 60 to 70 days.

Uses  Edible flowers are a creative way to add color and flavor to a dish.  Flowers can be dried or cooked, used to infuse drinks, pickled, and of course eaten fresh. They also play an important role in the ecosystem by attracting beneficial insects like bees and butterflies. It is also very important to identify edible flowers correctly. Not all flowers are edible and caution should be taken to identify flowers correctly.
