Sunflower microgreens are one of the most fun greens to grow. They have a sweet earthy flavour and add a nice crunch to salads, soups, sandwiches and almost any dish. They are packed with nutrient which makes them a great addition to juices and smoothies.
Difficulty level: Easy
Germination: 2-3 days
Total grow: 7-10 days
- Soak seeds for 1 to 2 hours in water. You will need roughly 150 grams of seed for our standard 27x50x3cm grow tray
- Lay a thin layer of moist coco peat and perlite mixture in a tray, about half the depth of the tray. Sunflower microgreens like compost and potting soil. Thus, you can substitute the coco peat and perlite for a compost, potting soil and perlite mixture as well. Mist the surface of the grow medium.
- Cover the surface area with seeds. Roughly 150 grams for our standard 27x50x3cm grow tray.
- Press down firmly and mist with water.
- Ad another tray (preferably without holes) on top of the seeds ad weight in the form of a thin tile or small stone. This helps to form strong roots and get rid of unwanted seed hulls.
- Keep wet with a spray bottle until all seeds have germinated. Remove top tray and flip over to place greens into blackout. This helps the stems to lengthen.
- After about 1 day place the tray into light. This could be into artificial light, sunlight. An exposed windowsill will work just fine.
- Make sure they have enough water each day. They should be ready between 10 and 12 days
Grow Tip:
During cold months Sunflower can take at least an additional week to grow from seed to harvest. Also, if you are struggling with mould issues, you can stop soaking seeds and sow directly onto medium. Cover seeds with a 1cm layer of moist grow medium and potting soil mixture.
