Garlic Chive Microgreen Seeds

Garlic Chive microgreens (Allium tuberosum) are a fine, flavourful microgreen known for their unique taste and attractive appearance. A member of the Allium family (onions, leeks, chives), they produce long, slender green stems and are typically harvested with the seed hull still attached, making them a favourite among chefs and home cooks looking for something distinctive and refined.

Flavour Profile & Uses

  • Mild garlic flavour

  • Subtle onion undertones

  • Light notes of sweetness

Ideal for use as a final garnish, in salads, wraps, seafood, stir-fries, and egg dishes.

These Garlic Chive microgreen seeds are suitable for home growers and commercial microgreen producers seeking a high-value, reliable crop with excellent culinary appeal.

Growing Information

  • Difficulty level: Intermediate

  • Germination: 3–5 days

  • Total grow time: 14–21 days

  • Seed rate: ±25–30 g per standard 27 × 52 × 3 cm tray

  • Seed count: ±300 seeds per gram

  • Optimal temperature: 20–30 °C

How to Grow Garlic Chive Microgreens

  1. Prepare a well-draining growing medium using a fine blend of coco coir, perlite, and vermiculite. Fill the tray to approximately half its depth and moisten the medium evenly.

  2. Lightly mist the surface before sowing.

  3. Evenly distribute the Garlic Chive seeds across the surface.

  4. Gently press the seeds into the surface to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.

  5. Mist again.
  6. Cover the seeds with a top tray (preferably without holes).

  7. Add 1–2 kg of weight (such as a small tile or stones) to encourage strong root development.

  8. Once all seeds have germinated, remove the weight and invert the top tray to form a dome over the seedlings. This blackout period encourages stem elongation.

  9. When stems reach 1–2 cm, remove the blackout dome. Place the growing tray into a tray without holes and move under light.

  10. Bottom water as needed, avoiding overwatering. The growing medium should never be soggy.

Harvest Note

Harvest Garlic Chive microgreens when they reach 8–10 cm or taller, while the seed hull is still attached. This stage offers the best presentation, texture, and flavour.

Light & Water Requirements

Garlic Chive microgreens require relatively little water, so take care not to overwater.

  • Apply 250–300 ml at a time for a standard 53 × 27 × 3 cm microgreen grow tray

  • Keep the medium evenly moist, never soggy

  • Use grow lights indoors or provide consistent natural light outdoors

  • Protect from extended periods of harsh direct sunlight

Grow Tip: Ensure Adequate Airflow

Garlic Chive microgreens are often sown densely to maximise yield per tray, which can lead to high humidity between stems. Ensure excellent airflow around the trays to promote healthy growth, reduce excess moisture, and prevent fungal issues.
Adding a small fan to your grow area can make a noticeable difference.
