Red Garnet Amaranth
Red Amaranth is a fine microgreen with a bright red colour. It has a mild earthy flavour and used in all sorts of dishes.
Difficulty level: Intermediate
Germination: 2-3 days
Total grow: 15-20 days
Sow weight: 7 to 10 grams per standard 52 x 27 x 3 cm grow tray
1. Lay a thin layer of coco peat and perlite mixture in a tray. Soil medium works well too. Cover the surface area with seeds. Ad another tray (preferably without holes) on top of the seeds. Add some weight in the form of a small tile or stone. This helps to form strong roots.
2. Keep wet with a spray bottle until all seeds have germinated and start to lift the top tray. Remove top tray and flip over to place greens into blackout. This helps the stems to lengthen. Do not make too wet as Amaranth is prone to damping off.
3. After about 2 days place the tray into light. This could be into artificial light, sunlight. An exposed windowsill will work just fine.
4. Make sure they have enough water each day, but not too much. They should be ready within 15 to 20 days.
Growing Notes:
Amaranth is prone to damping off. So, do not overwater. They grow well outside in natural sunlight.
Origin:
Early cultivation of Amaranth dates back to as early as 6000 years ago. It was domesticated as a pseudcereal from the weed A. hybridus. Grown for leaf vegetable, grain and recently microgreens.
