Purple Shiso (Perilla) Microgreen Seeds

Purple Shiso microgreens (Perilla frutescens) are a striking purple-and-green leaf microgreen prized for their bold colour, aromatic leaves, and complex flavour profile. Popular with chefs and specialty growers, shiso microgreens deliver a unique blend of cumin, anise, citrus, and subtle sweetness, making them ideal for garnishes, salads, sushi, and fine dining applications. Shiso is native to China and South East Asia and is prominant in Asian quisines, particularly Japanese, Korean and Chinese dishes.

These premium perilla microgreen seeds are suited to both home growers and commercial microgreen producers looking for something distinctive and high value.

Growing Information

  • Difficulty level: Difficult

  • Germination: 7–14 days

  • Total grow time: 21–28 days

  • Seed rate: ±4–6 g per standard 27 × 52 × 3 cm tray

  • Seeds Count: ±1000 seeds/gram
  • Temperature: best grown 20-25 °C

How to Grow Shiso Microgreens

  1. Prepare a well-draining growing medium using a fine mix of coco coir and perlite. Fill the tray to about half its depth and moisten evenly.

  2. Lightly mist the surface of the medium.

  3. Distribute seeds evenly across the surface (avoid oversowing, as shiso microgreens need space for proper leaf development).

  4. Gently press seeds into the medium to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.

  5. Mist again and optionally apply a very thin layer of vermiculite to help retain moisture. Lightly mist the vermiculite after application.

Light & Water Requirements

  • Perilla seeds are light-dependent germinators and must be exposed to light from day one.

  • Do not bury seeds, blackout, or use a weighted tray.

  • Use grow lights indoors, or ensure consistent light exposure outdoors.

  • Keep the medium evenly moist using a spray bottle until germination is complete. You can also use a humidity dome or plastic covering to keep moisture in.

  • When under light, water daily as needed, but avoid overwatering.

Grow Tip: Improve Germination Rates

Shiso seeds can benefit from cold stratification, especially if seed is older or conditions are marginal.

Cold stratification method:

  • Place seeds in the fridge for 4–7 days before sowing

  • This mimics winter conditions and can significantly improve germination and uniformity

⚠️ Remember: expose seeds to light immediately after sowing.
