Oreganum Vulgare is a woody perennial herb with aromatic spade shaped, olive-green leaves and pink or purple flowers. An excellent companion plant in vegetable gardens. Preferring hot, dry climates. It is commonly used in Mediterranean cuisine.

Growing notes:
Oregano prefers a warm, dry climate, is drought tolerant and does not do well in frost. It requires little water, be careful to not over water the plants. It can be harvested throughout the growing season by snipping off the leaves, although it is recommended to harvest before the flowers bloom for it’s peak flavor and aroma. Trimming lightly will encourage a dense and bushier plant.
Uses:
Culinary herb especially in Greek, Turkish, Spanish and Italian cuisine. An ideal aromatic for meat seasoning in stews and compliments olives and olive oil very well. As a medicinal herb it is usually brewed in a tea or a used for it’s essential oils that contain strong anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Phytonutrients in Oregano also make it a strong antioxidant.
Origin:
Native to the Mediterranean region, especially Greece, but has naturalized in most temperate climates around the world.
