Marigold 

Marigold , locally known as the Afrikaner. produces a mix of yellow, red, orange and bicoloured edible flowers.

Marigolds are know for excellent pest repellent plants. They have a scent that keep pests like nematodes and mosquitos away. They also attract beneficial insects like Ladybugs that kill unwanted insects like aphids. Marigolds also attract bees and butterflies to help pollinate other plants.

 

Difficulty level: Easy
Soil: Marigolds aren’t  too fussy and grow in many soil types. However, they do not like heavy clay soils that don’t allow good water drainage. Moderately fertile and well drained soil works best. You can prepare the soil by mixing in some compost. This improves fertility and will benefit growth.
Sowing: Spring/Summer
Germination: 7-14 days
Days to flowering: 70-80 days
Position: Full sun/Partial shade
Spacing: 25 x 25 cm
Sow Depth: 4 mm
Height: 20-30 cm
Growing Notes:
Marigolds require moist soil during first two weeks of growth. Thereafter, watering once a week should be enough. Water more during hot months.
Uses:
Firstly, Marigolds are edible and used in a variety of sweet and savoury dishes.  Secondly, Marigolds are used for companion planting in the garden to attract beneficial insects and repel unwanted pests.
Origin:
Marigold Targetes Patula form part of the family Asteraceae.  Common name French Marigold and called Afrikaner in South Africa. Targetes Patula of the family Asteraceae. The French Marigold is native to Mexico and Central America. These were brought to Europe in the 16th century and have since naturalized in many warm areas around the world.
