Growing notes:
Lemon balm is easy to grow and low maintenance. It does well in most soil types that drain well. It is one of the few herbs where over-fertilization will reduce the strength of it’s scent and flavour. So, it is best to insure the soil is prepared and well weeded prior to planting.
Sow directly into the growing area after the last spring frosts or start the seedlings indoors and transplant them once you have acclimatized them outdoors. Keep the soil moist throughout the growing period and apply a protective layer of mulch to ensure the soil retains moisture, especially during the dryer summer months. Pick the leaves as required throughout the season.
Lemon balm is well-suited to growing in pots as it does spread prolifically in favourable conditions and will self seed, to avoid this cutting it back after flowering will not only prevent it spreading but to also encourage a new full growth of leaves.
Uses:
Lemon balm is high in antioxidants with Thiamin and Vitamin C.
It has culinary uses in teas, syrups, sauces and cocktails and in cosmetics it is used in creams and balms for it’s fragrant oil.
Lemon balm is also used to make specialty honey, with it’s pollen giving the honey a delicate citrus flavour.
Origin:
Originally native to southern Europe and northern Africa but has been naturalized around the globe.
