Coconut coir are fine fibres from the husks of Coconuts. It is a versatile substrate and can be used in pure form or in a mix for a variety of applications. It is clean and free of bacteria which makes it the ideal substrate for growing microgreens, edible flowers and vegetables. Commonly used in seedling mixes, aquaponics, hydroponics and commercial farming.
When selecting grow medium for microgreens or any growing practices, it is important to know the characteristics of the medium and its uses. Coco Peat, Vermiculite and Perlite are extremely clean and free of harmful chemicals.
Washed Coco Peat VS buffered Coco Peat
In short, washed Coco peat has been through a simple washing process that removes water soluble components like sodium. Buffered Coco peat gos through a further process where the sodium and potassium are replaced by calcium.
If the sodium and potassium is not replaced, the fibres will draw out available calcium and magnesium from the seeds or available nutrients. In other words, there are less nutrients available for plants
Which one should you use?
Most microgreens perform fine with basic washed coco peat. However, greens grow better and stronger with buffered cocopeat. Maple Peas for instance struggle heavily in unbuffered coco peat.
Our recommended mix is 1 kg Coco Peat : 5 – 7 L water : 2 L Perlite : 1 L Vermiculite
The process:
In a clean container add 1 kg Coco Peat, add 5 to 7 litres water. The peat will expand and soak u all the water. Make sure there is no dry bits. Then add 2 litres of Perlite and 1 litre of vermiculite and mix. This should be enough for 5 to 6 standard 53 x 27 x 3 cm grow trays.
Origin:
Cocopeat is originally from India. It is a product of the inner fibres of the coconut husk. Fibres are washed with water, dried and compressed into blocks.
Please note our Coco Coir blocks vary in weight. This is due to the manufacturing process being quite variable. The large 5kg blocks weigh between 4 and 5kg.
