Celery-Tall Utah

Tall Utah Celery is a biennial vegetable, though typically grown as a annual, that is a strandless and tender celery with tightly folded hearts, and broad, well-rounded stalks and dark green leaves. It is resistant to bolting, does not require blanching and is a vigorous grower that does best in cooler weather and has a high disease tolerance.

Difficulty: Moderate

Soil: Well-draining soil rich in organic matter on the surface of the soil.

Sowing: Seeds can be started indoors or outdoors in early spring or autumn.

Germination: 7-14 days

Days to Maturity: 90-100 days

Position: Full sun

Spacing: 20 x 20 cm apart

Sow Depth: 5mm deep

Height: 50-70 cm

Growing notes:

Start by soaking the seeds for a few hours before planting to help speed-up the germination. Sow the seeds indoors in well-drained loamy soil with high amounts of organic matter. Do not cover the seeds with soil but cover the whole tray/pot with clear plastic to retain moisture and keep moist and water thoroughly throughout the sprouting and growing process. Celery requires consistent watering and regular fertilization.

Once the plants are more mature and established, plant them outside in similar soil with the addition of fertilizer on top of the soil and then mulch on top of the additional fertilizer to keep the soil as moist as possible and to cool the roots that are extremely shallow while also providing all the nutrients the plants need in the top layer of soil.

Harvest the celery by cutting the outer stalks and making space for the new growth and the plant will reproduce again as celery has a two year lifespan.

Uses:

Primarily used as a culinary vegetable in traditional Italian and French cuisine in soups, stews, and salads. High in vitamin C and dietary fiber.

Origin:

Celery originated as a marsh plant in the Mediterranean but the variety Tall Utah was developed in the 1940 around the Great Salt Lake area in the USA and was resistant to the Fusarium yellows fungus, that had been causing extensive losses to celery farms, it was then introduced to the public for growing by the Ferry Morse Seed company in 1953 and remains a favorite for home growing to this day.
