Basil-Red Rubin is a variety of sweet basil with dark purple leaves and lavender colored flowers that have a strong, sweet scent. It is the improved and stronger flavored variety of Dark Opal Basil.

Growing notes:
Basil-Red Rubin prefers warm weather and does not tolerate frost. The more sun it get’s the less chance of the leaves showing any green. It does not like to be transplanted once it is established. It requires consistent watering, but be careful not to overwater. Pinch off the top leaves and remove flower spikes regularly to encourage bushier growth.
Uses:
It is commonly used in culinary dishes and because of it’s stronger flavor and color that fades when cooked it is best used fresh. It is also used as a ornamental plant because of the brightness of the color making a dramatic and scented display in the garden.

Red Rubin basil is a strain of standard purple basil developed in Denmark prior to 1992.
