Dianthus Baby Doll Mix
Dianthus Caryopholus or more commonly know as Carnations, are a hardy annual that produces bright coloured edible flowers. The colours range from deep crimson, pink and white. They often have contrasting bands around the edges of flowers. They have a spicy sweetness to them and work well in many dishes, especially in deserts and summer drinks.
Get seeds started indoors in compost. Cover with only a thin layer of soil as the seeds need light to germinate. When seedlings have started and true leaves appear, gradually move them outdoors. Introduce them to sunlight gradually so that they can grow strong before transplanting into pots or the garden. Dianthus wonât tolerate overly wet soil. Occasionally dry is better than too moist so be careful not to over water the Dianthus. Removing old blossoms off of the plant encourages another round of blooming.
Uses:
Used in many gardens ornamentally for their beautiful colours and low-maintenance nature. Dianthus flowers attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators to the garden.
Dianthus flowers are edible, however remove and discard the bitter petal base before using only the petals to garnish or add their unique clove flavour in all sorts of drinks, desserts and salads.
Origin:
Native to Southern Europe and Asia and first mentioned by the ancient Greek botanist Theophrastus (c.371âc.287 B.C.) gave the Dianthus genus its name: âdivine flowerâ (dios + anthos). Dianthus was already popular in ancient Greece, where they were considered a divine flower and dedicated to Zeus, since then they were naturalized throughout Europe and spread worldwide from there to became one of many home-gardener’s favourites.
