Beetroot microgreens are a very rewarding crop to grow. They provide great flavour and colour to a dish.
Packed with nutrients and have an earthy flavour similar to the mature plant.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate
Germination: 3-4 days
Total grow: 21-31 days (Can grow faster in warmer conditions)
- Lay a thin layer of coco peat and perlite mixture in a tray. Please note, the Pindstrup Blond Special grow mix works really well for Beetroot and is highly recommend. Cover the surface area with seeds. Roughly 30 grams for a standard 52x27x3cm microgreens tray tray. We suggest soaking seeds in light solution of Hydrogen Peroxide (½ Tsp H2O2 : 500ml Water) for 30 minutes.
- Cover seeds with another thin layer (about 1 cm) of grow medium and press down firmly.
- Ad another tray (preferably without holes) on top of the seeds. Ad some weight in the form of a small tile or stone. This helps to form strong roots and get rid of unwanted seed hulls.
- Keep wet with a spray bottle until all seeds have germinated and start to lift the top tray. When you see greens coming through the grow medium. Remove the weight, but do not blackout. Leave top tray on and wait for greens to germinate further. TIP: You can blackout as short as possible by letting stems get 1/2 cm long then move to light. This helps stem walls strengthen and minimises chances of damping off. Some growers even skip blackout altogether.
- Introduce to light. This could be into artificial light, sunlight. An exposed windowsill will work just fine.
-
Water as needed. Do not overwater. The medium must never be soaked.
-
They should be ready between 21 and 31 days (Can grow faster in warmer conditions).
Grow Tip: If you are struggling with damping off and greens falling flat. We advise trying our Pindstrup Blond Special grow mix. It has added nutrients and helps grow stronger greens that are less prone to disease and damping off. Use as is. Add 600ml of water to 500g (2L) of dry Pindstrup and add to tray.
